On sale since 2012, BMW‘s F30 generation 3-Series sedan is preparing for its first mid-cycle facelift that won’t be limited to cosmetic updates.

Our latest intel suggests that BMW will introduce a new range of turbocharged three-cylinder diesel and petrol engines on the lower end of the lineup for Europe and other select markets around the world, but probably, not in North America where it will likely continue with inline fours and sixes.

The smaller 1.5-liter units codenamed B37 (diesel) and B38 (gasoline) are already in use on other models in the BMW Group, including the 2-Series Active Tourer and the latest MINI Hatchbaks. The petrol version should start from (134hp) and the diesel from 116PS (114hp).

Further up the range, the 328i will likely be replaced with the 330i sporting a new 2.0-liter turbocharged four codenamed B48, and the 335i with the 340i featuring a newer 3.0-liter turbocharged straight six, codenamed B58.

There will also be a new plug-in hybrid version pairing a four-cylinder TwinPower Turbo petrol engine with an electric motor and an 8-speed Steptronic transmission. This setup should deliver more than 240-horses.

As for the styling revisions, there will be subtle exterior changes such as the headlamps with available adaptive LEDs, reworked bumpers and some tweaks to the rear. Inside, the 2016 3-Series should get higher grade materials, new trims and BMW’s latest infotainment upgrades.
