Marussia to Make a Miraculous Last Minute Comeback in F1?

Having missed the last three races of 2014 due to financial problems, the Marussia F1 team went into receivership in October and, last month, auctioned off some of its assets to pay its debts.

Another auction was scheduled for Wednesday, January 21, and this one involved parts that are essential to the team if it is to make a comeback. It sounds like a very long shot, but with Manor Grand Prix still holding its 2015 entry, it may happen.

ESPN reports team boss John Booth told the BBC that “postponing the auction gives us a bit more time to explore it”. He added that chances are “pretty high” that a deal can be struck.

It won’t be an easy task. When it went bankrupt, Marussia had a £31 million debt, £16.6 of which to engine supplier Ferrari. However, the team’s former sporting director said that “technically, it’s possible. We’re working hard, very hard – it’s still possible for the team to get there”.

The deal with Manor Racing will have to be sealed pretty quickly, as the season starts on March 16. Obviously, Marussia hasn’t developed a new car for 2015, but the FIA has granted both it and Caterham, which also went into receivership last October, a license to compete with their 2014 cars.
