It’s been a while since we last saw or heard anything about the BMW M2, but today, our friend Tom pointed us to an Instagram account with an interesting picture.

The BMW prototype was caught last night by Instagram user simfar22 driving on California’s Beverley Beverly Boulevard. It’s under heavy camouflage, but the blistered wheel arches on both ends suggest that this is indeed a tester for the M2 Coupe.

Munich’s new hotshot will likely adopt BMW’s revised N55 3.0-liter turbo’d inline-six churning out around 370 to 380 horses, which should prove enough for the compact and lightweight body of the 2-Series coupe – and if it doesn’t, the tuning industry will surely chip in to satisfy more extreme performance needs.

A standard six-speed manual or an optional seven-speed dual clutch transmission with steering wheel mounted shift paddles will turn the rear axle that will come complete with an electronically controlled limited slip differential with torque vectoring function.

The M2 is scheduled for a world premiere later this year.

Thanks to Tom for the tip!
