Spied: New MINI John Cooper Works Gets Convertible Version Too

At this week’s Detroit Motor Show, MINI revealed the John Cooper Works (JCW) version of the hatch, but that’s only half the story.

The BMW Group-owned brand has a Convertible version in the works (pun intended) and these are the first spy shots of the car testing in Europe.

Like the new sported-up hatchback version, the JCW Convertible will get its power from a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-banger returning 228hp (231PS) between 5,200 and 6,000 rpm and 236lb-ft (320Nm) of peak torque from 1,250 to 4,800 rpm.

It should offer the same choice of transmissions, a standard six-speed manual and an optional six-speed Steptronic automatic.

Upgraded sports suspension, steering and brakes along with a new exhaust system complete the mechanical improvements over the standard drop-top Cooper models.

Elsewhere, the JCW version gets a pumped-up design with specific front and rear bumpers, roof spoiler, side sills, 18-inch wheels and twin, central-mounted pipes on the outside, and sport seats and unique trim and upholsteries on the inside.

The JCW Convertible is expected later this year.
