I have a confession to make: my first car was a VW Golf. Just a bog-standard 1.4-liter model with 60hp. I know, it struggled to outrace a turtle, one with a broken leg at that, but that’s all the family could afford. I do hope that you don’t hold that against me.

In spite of the fond memories I have of this car (you always remember your first fondly, right?), it wasn’t the one that turned me into a car fan. Better make that a car freak, actually, or I’d never been writing these lines, never mind the hundreds of thousands before.

No, what made me love cars was the white Ferrari Testarossa in Miami Vice, way before I could get my driving license. Low, wide, with a sound to die for, for me it was the quintessential supercar of its time. It just defined the genre. Then I saw and heard one in the flesh (or metal) and that was it.

Remember, at that time the Internet and the high-tech game consoles were still into the future and all we had was TV and magazines. If I were younger, I guess the F40 would be the one, but sadly I’m not…

Thankfully, I didn’t take up on Don Johnson’s pink T-shirts and rolled-up sleeves – just the wheels. I even had a die-cast model, though (naturally) it was red. A 512iBB followed and over the years it was joined by a few others, not all of them Ferraris.

Now, if you’re reading this, I assume that you’re into cars. So, now that I’ve told you mine, which model made you a car fan? Be our guest and tell us in the comments section right below.
