If you’ve watched last Sunday’s episode of Top Gear, you’ve heard the guys say that both McLaren and Ferrari had a few issues with allowing their cars to race against their direct rivals on the TG track.

First of all, we’d like to say that watching The Stig set a fast lap in each of these three hybrid hypercars would be an awesome viewing experience, not just visually but, perhaps most of all, informatively. We’re dying to know which of these cars is quickest around a track.

Is it the LaFerrari? Is it the McLaren P1? Or could the Porsche 918 Spyder have the edge thanks to its all wheel drive system, as Jeremy pointed out.

This whole thing is a mess if you ask us. According to Clarkson, McLaren didn’t want their P1 to go against the LaFerrari and the 918 at the Top Gear track, they wanted a different, undisclosed track as the venue. It might have something to do with the 918’s all-wheel drive system favoring it, as Jeremy says, in the “twisty bits”.

McLaren also want all the cars to be customer cars – which is actually a very fair request. Ferrari on the other hand, initially didn’t even want to take part in such a comparison test, but, having warmed up to the idea, they eventually told Top Gear that they would only do it if they’re allowed to bring a factory car and not a customer car, which to us sounds very fishy.

Ferrari have already been accused (by Chris Harris) of modifying their press cars out of the factory and making them a bit faster than their customer cars.

Porsche on the other hand were up for it, no questions asked, and we applaud them for their attitude. However McLaren just came out on twitter and said that they had a P1 on stand by to shoot the track battle this week but it was Top Gear themselves who canceled.

Well, of course they canceled if they couldn’t get all three manufacturers to agree on terms. And as car enthusiasts, we’re less angry at McLaren than we are at Ferrari really. McLaren’s terms were somewhat understandable. We agree that all cars should be customer cars and as for the TG track, hey, if they prefer a different track, then fine, whatever. It’s not like TG’s track is the pinnacle of motorsport racing anyway.

We just hope this thing gets settled soon so we can finally know once and for all, which modern-day hybrid hypercar is the fastest around a track.
