In Formula 1, you’re only as quick as your car. If you’re running a non-competitive power unit or with poor aerodynamics, it won’t matter if you’re the best skilled driver in the whole world.

Last year, it was Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg that took home the gold for Mercedes AMG Petronas. Despite their obvious mechanical advantage, you can’t really take anything away from them talent wise. Lewis is the truth.

But perhaps the strongest driver line-up right now hails from McLaren, where Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso have 3 World Championships between them. Lots of drivers in his position could feel threatened within the team’s hierarchy, but Button spoke highly of his new teammate during the launch of the McLaren-Honda MP4-30.

Button said that “Fernando is a very experienced driver, a very complete driver, as you would expect from someone that’s had so much experience in this sport but also a double World Champion. It’s great for me, I love having a teammate that obviously pushes me hard but also has the experience to give great feedback.”

Speaking of feedback, this is where the duo seem to see eye to eye, wanting similar characteristics from the MP4-30. “From what I see in the data from the simulator runs and from the feedback i get from Fernando, I think we like a similar car. This is very important for us moving forward in terms of shaping the molding the car in a certain direction.”

If Button and Alonso do indeed share the same driving preferences, it would go a long way as far as developing the car in a direction which is beneficial to both drivers. It would also be a more efficient way for the team to operate, focusing on setting up basically one car instead of two different ones.
