I really didn’t know and didn’t expect that someone went through the trouble of tuning a hearse to make it the fastest in the world. I didn’t think it was necessary – and yet, someone did it.

Arne Toman from Chicago, Illinois, one day noticed the record for the world’s fastest hearse could be improved. To do it, he needed a really fast coffin carrier, so he took a 1996 Chevrolet Caprice and fitted it with a 6.0-liter turbocharged engine producing 1,000 hp.

As a result, the unusual hearse can go from 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) in just 2.26 seconds – quicker than most hypercars. The Caprice set a new world record with a 9.94 second quarter mile run at 137.76 (221.7 km/h). No one has broken that record, but just in case someone wants to do it, Arne will fit his hearse with a new engine and a bigger turbo, lifting power to 1,300hp.
