Mercedes-Benz has released the first official photo of the G 500 4×4² show car, scheduled to debut at the Geneva Motor Show.

This car was first spotted during testing in November 2014, and we got a glimpse of it again in January this year. While at the time we believed it was the four-wheeled brother of the G63 AMG 6×6, it doesn’t sport the G63 AMG moniker, instead being called G 500 4×4².

That means it’s powered by the standard G 500’s 5.5-liter V8 petrol engine. However, in this case it has been tuned to produce 422PS (416hp), 35PS more than the standard model which has 387PS (382hp).

So even if it doesn’t get the AMG treatment, it will still be quick enough, given that it should be much more lighter than the 6×6 version. Just like the 6×6 model, the G 500 4×4² gets a huge ground clearance, larger 22-inch wheels shod with off-road tires and exterior styling enhancements.

Mercedes-Benz may label it as a show car for now, but it will probably go into production. After all, if the G63 AMG 6×6 was eventually built, why wouldn’t the automaker bring this much more conventional version to market?
