Europe’s booming crossover segment is the reason why VW has presented a second generation of its Passat Alltrack model.

The new Passat Alltrack wraps the off-road ability and rugged looks of an SUV onto an otherwise conventional station wagon package. It rides on a 27.5mm (1 inch) taller and modified suspension and gets stainless steel underbody plates to protect the car’s exposed parts.

VW beefed up the appearance of the Passat Alltrack with plastic cladding around the redesigned bumpers, wheel arches and side sills, new roof rails, silver accents, and a new set of standard 17-inch or optionally, 18- or 19-inch wheels.

VW’s 4Motion Haldex all-wheel drive system comes as standard with the Alltrack to be offered in Europe with two petrol units, the turbocharged 150PS (148hp) 1.4-liter TSI and 220PS (217hp) 2.0-liter TSI, and three 2.0-liter diesels rated for 150PS (148hp), 190PS (187hp) and 240PS (237hp). Depending on the model, six-speed manuals and six-speed dual clutch transmissions will be available.

The most powerful petrol and diesel units get Volkswagen’s XDS+ system that applies the brakes on the inside wheels to aid turn-in during fast corners, while all models will have an ‘Off Road’ function in addition to the ‘Eco’, ‘Normal’ and ‘Sport’ driving modes found in the regular Euro-market Passat.

Following its debut at the Geneva Motor Show, the new Passat Alltrack will go on sale in Europe by the end of September.
