The rumors and reports about Toyota re-badging Mazda’s 2 sedan into the Scion iA for North America were spot on.

Scion has yet to officially unwrap the sub-compact model, but the iA was scooped undisguised on Autonews revealing its true Mazda2 nature and explaining why Toyota’s subsidiary chose to give us only a front-quarter crop teaser of the car ahead of its New York Auto Show debut next week.

As the crew at TheTruthAboutCars mentioned, the above rendering from our friends over at Top Speed is 99 percent accurate, with Scion’s design efforts fundamentally limited to the front bumper and headlamps – we didn’t see anything else different in the spy shots.

The Scion iA will be produced at Mazda’s new manufacturing facility in Mexico. It will use the same 1.5-liter four-cylinder SkyActive gasoline engine as the “2”, which for the Mexican market, is rated at 106hp and 103lb-ft of peak torque, while Europe gets three versions of the same unit producing 75PS (74hp), 90PS (89hp) and 115PS (113hp), with the latter featuring Mazda’s i-ELOOP regenerative braking system.
