The Chevrolet Trax has climbed to the number two spot in market share in the small SUV segment after three full months on the US market. The Trax is only behind the Buick Encore, which is essentially the same car, but with a more premium appearance.

On sale since mid-December, the Chevrolet Trax racked up more than 6,000 sales in the United States, with a 25.5 percent share in February. The small SUV is responsible from bringing new customers into Chevrolet showrooms, as 47 percent of Trax buyers are new to the brand. Of the new buyers, 58 percent are women, which is the highest percentage in the segment.

Also, 19 percent of new customers are under the age of 35. GM says dealers are requesting three to five times the number allocated to them because of customer interest.

“The Trax gives customers another choice in the Chevrolet portfolio between small cars and SUVs. It offers customers a well-equipped, entry-level SUV that was not an option before, and it is one more way we hope to earn customers for life,” said Steve Majoros, Chevrolet director of marketing for cars and crossovers.

The small SUV segment is expected to continue its spectacular development, with analysts saying it has a lot of room to grow.

“The small utility segment has seen phenomenal growth in the U.S. and across the globe. AutoTrader saw a huge increase in shopping traffic for small utilities in 2014. Of all our shopping traffic, 46 percent looked at SUVs and CUVs in 2014, up from 36 percent in 2013,” said Michelle Krebs, an analyst with AutoTrader.com.
