The first official image of the 2016 Fiat 500 facelift has landed on the web, just hours prior to the Italian mini’s world premiere at the New York Auto Show.

This is the first significant cosmetic update to Fiat’s retro-styled city car since it was introduced back in 2007. It’s a subtle evolution that gives the 500 a fresher face with slightly bigger and more almond-shaped headlamps together with a new bumper and LED daytime running lights.

We only have a front-quarter view of the car, but from previous spy shots that we’ve attached below, Fiat will likely tweak the styling of the rear bumper and tail lamps, while we also expect changes inside with a new infotainment system featuring a standalone screen and possibly, a revised instrument panel.

Under the hood, the 2016 500 will get some powertrain improvements across the board, but the most important news for North American customers is the availability of a new diesel. We’ll have more information on that later in the day.
