It’s no secret that BMW is currently working on the expansion of the “i” sub-brand with the latest reports talking again for a plug-in hybrid sedan based on the next 5-Series.

The report comes this time from German magazine Auto Bild and talks about the so-called i5 which according to them will combine a petrol engine with two electric motors and have an all-electric range of 65 miles (125km).

The same reports says the upcoming i5 is expected in 2018 with a price of about €100,000 (about $107,000) and will be based on a longer version of the regular 5-Series. The new model will sit below the i8 which will remain the flagship of the trio.

However, BMW told AutoNews that this report is a “speculation” with R&D chief Klaus Froehlich dismissing reports saying that the third model would be based on the X5 SUV.
