Euro NCAP has released the results of its latest crash test session, which included the Fiat 500X, Mazda2, Renault Espace and Suzuki Vitara.

The five-star rating was awarded to the Espace and the Vitara, while the 500X and Mazda2 each got four stars.

Surprisingly, the Suzuki Vitara did better than the Renault Espace, with an 89 percent rating for adult occupant protection, 85 percent for child occupant, 76 percent for pedestrian and 75 percent for safety assist. The Vitara picked up points for its Autonomous Emergency Braking system, which was included in the rating scheme since last year.

The Renault Espace got an 82 percent rating for adult occupant protection, 89 percent for child occupant, 70 percent for pedestrian and 80 percent for safety assist. In the frontal offset test, structures in the dashboard presented a risk of injury on the passenger side, while in the side impact barrier test the rear driver’s side door opened, presenting a risk of ejection for passengers.

The Fiat 500X received 86 percent for adult occupant protection, 85 percent for child occupant, 74 percent for pedestrian and 64 percent for safety assist. The crossover lost points because the autonomous emergency braking system is not offered as standard, which is why Euro NCAP didn’t assess its performance at low speeds typical to city driving.

As for the Mazda2, it got 86 percent for adult occupant protection, 78 percent for child occupant, 84 percent for pedestrian and 64 percent for safety assist. The Japanese supermini was penalized for the same issue as the 500X – not offering an autonomous emergency braking system as standard equipment.
