Honda has unveiled the Concept D at the Shanghai Auto Show, a study that previews a new SUV for the Chinese market.

Honda says the Concept D points at the design direction of a production SUV that is currently being developed exclusively for the China domestic market “as a top-end SUV model that offers high-quality driving and a spacious cabin.”

The Concept D-based SUV will be equipped with advanced safety technologies and other advanced features and will go on sale as a new flagship model of Honda in China. The model will be built by Guangqi Honda and Dongfeng Honda joint ventures.

The study features a dynamic profile, muscular wheel arches and aggressive-looking bumpers. It also sports sleek LED headlights and taillights as well as a big tailgate spoiler. No photos of the interior were revealed.

“Including this Concept D, which is a proposal for a new value that only Honda can provide as the pioneer of the SUV market in China, we would like to continue providing attractive products equipped with our advanced technologies to our customers in China. Toward this end, we will accelerate the localization of our business in China,” said Seiji Kuraishi, President of Honda Motor China Investment, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Honda Motor Company.
