Lotus is currently developing a “revolutionary” five-door crossover at the company’s Hethel design studios. Described by CEO Jean-Marc Gales as “the world’s first lightweight SUV” and a “real Lotus,” the crossover will be built in a new plant in south-east China.

The new vehicle should arrive in 2019 and may become Lotus’ best-selling model ever. The crossover will be the first project of the recently-announced joint venture between Lotus, its Malaysian owner Proton and Goldstar Heavy Industrial, a Chinese engineering and trading company.

The crossover’s name will begin with “E” as all Lotus’ current sports cars, and will be available with all-wheel drive. Where it will be different than competitors, Gales says, is in lightweight construction and performance. “Our car will drive beautifully. It will be supple and comfortable but the emphasis will be on handling. It will be the lightest and fastest of its class on the track,” the executive told Autocar magazine.

In terms of styling, the new crossover will sport familiar design cues in a new packaging. The model is expected to have a low ride height and similar length and wheelbase to the Porsche Macan and Audi Q5. However, it will be about 30mm lower and slightly wider, for a more dynamic appearance.

By using lightweight materials for the body and chassis, plus forged alloy components for suspension, Lotus estimates the SUV will weigh about 200kg (441lbs) less than key rivals. As for engine options, Gales said the SUV could use powertrains similar to the supercharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder and 3.5-liter V6 engines which currently equip Lotus sports cars.
