Recently released research from YouGov says one in three people in Europe have experienced a parking incident in the last five years.

The survey, which included 9,177 drivers across the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain, also found that 16 percent of those involved in parking incidents suffered car damage.

Italian drivers were the most accident-prone with one in two admitting to damaging their cars over the same period – 26 percent of them doing so while parking. British drivers were found the most cautious, with just 10 percent reporting a parking-related incident.

Reversing proved the most challenging maneuver in four out of five nations surveyed, accounting for 45 percent of all parking bumps.

Taking this into account, Nissan decided to assist unsuspecting motorists and demonstrate how vehicle technology can be a welcomed driver aide. A car park in Rome became the proving ground for Nissan’s Around View Monitor (AVM) and Moving Object Detection technology offered in the Pulsar compact hatchback.

AVM gives the driver a virtual bird’s-eye view of their vehicle as he or she maneuvers into a space. What Nissan did was take the technology out of the Pulsar and install it on motorists’ cars, to show them the advantages of the Around View Monitor.

“By taking this technology out of the Pulsar and installing it in a car park in Italy we have given drivers the opportunity to see for themselves how Around View Monitor can take the stress out of parking and help them park with confidence – while also helping to avoid damage to their car,” said Bastien Schupp, Vice President of Marketing for Nissan Europe.
