While previous versions of the VW Golf R were aimed at lower-performance models from Subaru and Mitsubishi, like the latter’s Ralliart line of vehicles, it was priced above them. The latest R is still very expensive for what it is, but at least you do get performance to match, say, a Subaru WRX STI.

EverydayDriver compared the two cars, and found that it’s really rather hard to choose a winner. If it’s outright performance that you’re after and can live with a cheap-feeling interior, then the Subaru is for you; it’s clearly more performance oriented than the Golf, a car that also has to feel plush, premium and cosseting.

In our book neither is a winner in this comparison, as they are actually quite different propositions; they seem similar at first glance, but they’re arguably not as cross-shopped as this video would have you believe.
