Now, while the current supercharged V6 that Jaguar uses is eerily similar to what the classic straight-six soundtrack that you got out of the back of an E-Type, it is a break from tradition. Jaguar is apparently going to correct this and is reportedly working on its own straight-six and corresponding downsized three-cylinder.

We have very few specifics, but MotorTrend says the current V6 will be phased out after 2016 and replaced with this rumored new unit. The source doesn’t say much, but we can safely assume the six-pot will have a displacement of three liters and the three-pot half-that – the BMW approach.

The fact that they are also going to have a three pot could add more credibility to the rumors that Jaguar is also working on a rival for the BMW 1-Series; the base version of that would use this supposed new three-cylinder that’s coming in a few years’ time.

All we have to do now is wait for official confirmation, but who knows when that will come, as Jaguar was tight lipped about the Ingenium family of engines until right before revealing them to the public.
