After months of rolling out testers with bogus graphics and camo, Porsche has finally unleashed a prototype of the 911 facelift showing its true face, though, frankly, only genuine Porschephiles will be impressed with the styling changes…

The 991-generation update gives the 911 fresh headlamp clusters that retain their previous shape but employ the latest light tech, plus a new front bumper with much thinner LED daytime running lamps and two creases that follow the lines of the hood.

Elsewhere on the outside, the 2016 Porsche 911 gets new door handles, a reworked rear bumper with additional vents on the corners, new-style intakes for the engine and revamped LED taillights that on this tester, continue to be hidden under fake graphics. This model also has two center-mounted tailpipes, but at this point, we’re not sure if it’s the GTS or another variant.

Porsche has planned revisions for the interior as well, with our previous spy shots revealing a new 918 Spyder-style steering wheel design that incorporates a driving mode selector, a larger screen for the updated infotainment system and new switchgear.

We left the most significant change for last, as Porsche is believed to use the 991’s mid-cycle facelift to introduce its new line of turbocharged flat-six engines for the non-GT models. Reports from Germany support that there will be two versions, a 2.7-liter unit with around 370PS (365hp) and 450Nm (332 lb-ft) for the Carrera and a 3.0-liter mill delivering about 420PS (414hp) and 510Nm (376 lb-ft) in the Carrera S.

We’ll probably see the refreshed Porsche 911 in late summer before its world premiere at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.
