VW has brought two all-new turbocharged petrol engines and the latest-generation TDI diesels for light commercial vehicles at the Vienna Motor Symposium.

The most interesting engine is the high-performance 1.0-liter 3-cylinder TSI based on the EA211 engine. The unit is capable of generating 272PS (268hp) and 270Nm (199lb-ft) of torque thanks to a monoscroll turbocharger and e-booster. “A nice example of just how much potential combustion engines still have in them,” said Volkswagen Group Head of Powertrain Development, Dr. Heinz-Jakob Neußer. However, VW didn’t say whether this engine is ready for production or is still in the development phase.

However, the other TSI engine unveiled in Vienna is production-ready – the 6.0-liter W12 TSI which produces 608PS (600hp) at 6,000 rpm and 900Nm (664lb-ft) of torque between 1,500 and 4,500 rpm. VW says the new W12 TSI is “the most economical twelve-cylinder engine in the luxury car segment,” with CO2 emissions of less than 250 g/km in the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC). Depending on the vehicle model, 12-cylinder engine delivers acceleration values of 0 to 100 km/h in less than 4 seconds and top speeds of over 300 km/h (186 mph).

For this new engine, VW Group has combined the two combustion methods that until now have been used in parallel – Audi’s FSI direct injection and Bentley’s TMPI multi-point injection. The extensive list of modifications include twin-scroll biturbo charging, dual fuel injection with high pressure direct and low pressure manifold injection, individual cylinder bank deactivation (on the left in the direction of travel), engine management with two controllers as well as a start/stop system that reduces fuel consumption and emissions. The W12 TSI will equip the Bentley Bentayga and Continental, the next-generation Audi A8 and possibly the upcoming VW Phaeton.

Finally, VW has also unveiled the new EU6 TDI engine family for light-duty vehicles. The newly developed 2.0 TDI 4V engine, based on the modular diesel component system (MDB), will debut in the new Multivan and Transporter models. The engine has four versions covering a power range of 84PS (83hp) to 204PS (201hp) and a torque range of 220Nm (162lb-ft) to 450Nm (332lb-ft).
