Jaguar Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) division is reportedly planning to bring to market some extreme off-road models relatively soon.

In a recent interview with Car&Driver, SVO boss John Edwards said the models will feature the SVX designation and will provide “added capability” for Land Rover SUVs. SVX vehicles will co-exist with other SVO creations such as the performance-orientated SVR models and luxurious SVAutobiography versions.

However, while SVR and (possibly) SVAutobiography versions will be offered both for Jaguar and Land Rover products, SVX will be exclusive to Land Rover. Edwards didn’t provide more details about SVX models, but he said they will be inspired by vehicles from events like the Camel Trophy and Dakar Rally.

SVX Land Rovers will therefore feature radically improved off-road performance. When asked whether this means SVX vehicles would be similar to the Bowler Wildcat or Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG 6×6, Edwards replied: “It could be either of those things, it could be both. This is the third side of the product triangle, and one that we think has got huge potential.”

For the moment no one knows which Land Rover models will get SVX versions, but a safe bet would be the next-generation Defender.
