BMW is preparing a faster, more focused i8 hybrid model, according to reports.

The hardcore i8 will not be using the famous M moniker though; BMW has already said that the two sub-brands, ‘i’ and ‘M’ will never meet. According to Auto Express, the target for the new model is a 0-62mph (100km/h) time of less than 4 seconds and that the extra power will come from the petrol engine alone, as the electric motor will remain as is.

The total output is expected to reach the 450hp mark as it is understood that the three-cylinder 228hp 1.5-litre turbocharged unit will be replaced by a four-cylinder 2.0-litre turbo producing more than 300hp.

The faster i8 will feature more lightweight solutions in order to keep the weight as down as possible, probably with the extensive use of carbon-fibre for the body and a stripped-out interior.

The new car will be ready just in time for BMW to celebrate its centenary next year and is expected to visually be quite more aggressive than the ‘regular’ i8, with bigger wheels, stickier tyres and an extensive aero agenda.
