Should you be looking to buy the outgoing BMW 7-Series in the US, you’d be foolish to overlook the diesel, especially if you’re into long non-stop trips (over 600 miles / 965 km).

Not only is it more effortless than the larger and thirstier V8 petrol, but it also has no trouble beating its claimed efficiency figures, a feat the gas engine cannot muster no matter how you tickle it.

Now that the new one is right around the corner, prices on these second-hand will start going down. MotorWeek says it’s nearly faultless in the way it works and while it may not be the most refined luxo-diesel you can buy, nor is it the one with the longest range, it’s far better than you’d expect if you’ve never been in a plush oil burner before.
