The Fiat Chrysler Automobile (FCA) group is, if not the first, one of the first carmakers to react to the US Supreme Court’s landmark ruling on Friday to make marriage for same-sex couples legal nationwide.

The Detroit-based carmaker issued a statement on the high court’s 5-4 decision that overturns bans on gay marriage in 14 states in the South and Midwest, including Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, Tennessee and Texas.

FCA US has a longstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion, and respects the belief that everyone should be treated equally under the law and opposes any law that can result in discrimination,” said the Detroit firm.

“FCA US is a longtime supporter of  LGBT communities and issues and was among the first automakers to offer domestic partner benefits to its employees. We applaud today’s U.S. Supreme Court decision.”
