Since automakers will soon start offering Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility as standard in their cars, Consumer Reports thought it would be a good idea to test these in-car phone integration systems.

They used a VW Jetta with an aftermarket head unit from Pioneer, compatible with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Right from the start, the most important advantage becomes obvious: both systems allow the use of the phone’s up-to-date navigation maps on the car’s main screen, even if the car isn’t fitted with satellite navigation.

As the reviewers point out, Android and Apple phones have much better maps than built-in navigation systems offered by automakers, not to mention they’re updated and have many more points of interest. And it’s obviously cheaper to get a phone than to order your car with optional satellite navigation.

However, not everything is perfect in the world of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, as you will find out from the following video.
