When your most talented driver says its time to focus on next year, that should send a clear enough message to both the team as well as the fan base.

Fernando Alonso was recently quoted as saying that “With the position we are in and the performance we have, I think concentrating on next year is the clever option for us now. I don’t have any problem starting every single race from the pit lane if we keep improving the car. That’s the main priority now, to concentrate on next year’s performance, so let’s see what the team can offer.”

We’re pretty sure that at some point, McLare-Honda are going to score a few more points this year, but there’s no way for them to kick their in-season development into overdrive and challenge the might of the Mercedes engines.

Now, we’re not trying to go all “tabloid” on you guys and make it sound like Alonso doesn’t care about performance for 2015, because he does. He is most certainly a competitor.

But by stating that he has no problem with starting every race from the pit lane (which could happen because of the way they use their engine tokens), he’s basically saying that he’d rather have a fighting chance in 2016 than score 1-2 more points in 2015.

To be fair, there’s nothing wrong with that. In fact, there’s nothing more frustrating for a champion, a competitor like Alonso, than not being able to put up a fight against his rivals.

Hopefully McLaren fans can be patient for one more year as 2016 will surely feel more like the days of old.
