Fiat’s recently unveiled Aegea compact sedan accurately previews the design of the production car, but not its name. Fiat brand chief Olivier Francois said the new compact family, which will also include a hatchback and an estate, will not be called Aegea. The name will be released later.

Fiat will start selling the compact sedan and hatchback in Europe, Middle East and Africa starting in November, as replacements for the Linea and Bravo, respectively.

According to Francois, the production model will be frugal, well-built and practical. Much like the Panda, “it will not be overloaded with frills that the customer will not want to pay for,” Francois was quoted as saying by Autonews Europe. The executive added that the compact Fiat will be positioned alongside the Panda city car in the practical side of the brand.

The sedan, hatchback and estate will all be built at Fiat’s joint venture Tofas plant in Bursa, northwest Turkey. Francois declined to talk about pricing, production and sales targets for Fiat’s new compact family. However, last year Tofas said it would build a combined 700,000 units of the compact range over the life cycle of the vehicles until 2023, with most of the production destined for export markets.

The production Fiat Aegea will be available with two petrol and two diesel engines with outputs ranging from 95hp to 120hp. The most economical diesel will average less than 4 l/100 km (70 mpg UK), the automaker said.
