James May recently sold his red 1984 Porsche 911 at an auction held at Goodwood on June 26. He apparently was rather chuffed as he managed to pass on the car for nearly twice what he was planning to get for it.

The winning bid for his 911 (which, as we all know, has the factory sport pack) was just over £50,000.

Following the conclusion of the auction, Mr. May reportedly said “as a 911, it’s significant for being near the tail-end of the development of the original 1963 car. As a piece of social history, since it’s Guards Red and has the sports pack, it stands as a monument to everything 1980s Britain was about.

He concludes by saying “it’s the 911 that Denis Thatcher would have driven, if he’d had one.”

As a reminder, it’s the car he drove from his home to the Top Gear offices in a vlog-style video posted by the BBC back in 2010.
