Peugeot is planning to surprise us at the Goodwood Festival of Speed with two performance cars, one of which is new.

We’re talking about a “new 308 performance model”, as Peugeot stated, and the 308 R HYbrid concept car, which is set to make its European appearance.

Of course, with its 493 HP output, the 308 R HYbrid concept will remain just what its name suggests – a concept – meant to act as an eye pleaser at various shows across the globe. That’s why we’re more interested in the new 308 performance model.

Although not pointing the obvious, it’s clear that Peugeot is referring to the 308GTi – as the newest member of its performance line-up. According to Autocar magazine, the French hot-hatch will allegedly be powered by the same 266 HP, for-pot turbocharged 1.6-litre, that’s available now on the RCZ R model.

That means the people who brought us some of the most iconic hot-hatches of all time, are returning to their roots with the upcoming model. Of course, a manual gearbox (at least for now) and FWD are mandatory and judging by its spec, it will go head to head with the Ford Focus ST and Volkswagen Golf GTi.

The car will be presented as one of the static exhibits of Peugeot’s line-up, along with the 308 R HYbrid. But just in case someone wants to experience what a French GTi might feel like, some of Peugeot’s current performance enhanced cars can be booked to drive up the famous Hill Climb at Goodwood – the 308 GT 205 THP Hatchback, 308 GT Line PureTech 1.2-litre and the 208 ‘GTi by Peugeot Sport’.
