We just got our first sighting of a prototype of Audi’s second-gen A5 coupe that will also spawn successors to the Convertible and Sportback models of the family.

While the tester still lacks final production parts on the front end and is covered in a swirly camouflage wrap from top to bottom, we can safely say that Audi is planning to pull another… R8-style evolutionary redesign on us with the new A5 Coupe.

That’s not necessarily a bad thing, though, because the current A5 is widely considered as one of the best looking coupes in its segment that includes the BMW 4-Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe and Cadillac ATS Coupe.

Much like Audi’s second-generation R8, the devil is in the details with the new A5 embellishing the existing model’s familiar silhouette with fresh styling cues, including door mounted mirrors, a steeper rear window, narrower tail lamps and a more pronounced, integrated spoiler on the boot.

Then there’s the front end that seemingly gets a TT-like clamshell hood and big headlamps, but as we said before, the fascia may be fitted with non-production parts to hide the real design from prying eyes, so we’re not so sure that this is what it will look like. Plus, every single Audi concept in the past 18 months, from the Allroad Shooting Brake to the recent trio of Prologue studies, was fitted with very slim and sleek headlamps, so it doesn’t seem right that the Germans would give the A5 such big eyes…

The A5 Coupe is a sister model to the upcoming, B9 codenamed 2016 A4 series, with which it shares its lighter MLB Evo architecture, a variant of which is also used on the new Q7 SUV. We expect that the A5 will follow the trend and drop as much as 100kg (220 pounds) over the car it replaces.

Powering the A5 will be a range of longitudinally mounted 1.8- and 2.0-liter TFSI turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline and 2.0-liter and 3.0-liter TDI diesels, with the lineup to be expanded with the 3.0-liter supercharged V6 S5 and later on, the high-performance RS5.
