Toyota announced a new Euro 6 diesel powertrain option for the Land Cruiser as well as some revised equipment specs for their big off roader.

The new diesel engine is a 2.8-litre D-4D unit with 174hp and a peak torque of 309lb ft (420Nm) between 1,400 and 2,400rpm, replacing the current 3.0-litre engine. Also new is the six-speed automatic gearbox, which replaces the old five-speed unit, helping the Land Cruiser scoring a nine per cent improvement in fuel economy and CO2 emissions.

That means that the Toyota Land Cruiser now returns a combined 39.2mpg and 194g/km for the five-door version. Toyota has also added more equipment in the available trim levels with the entry-level Active models to now have DAB radio as standard, the Icon models benefiting from Toyota’s Touch 2 with Go Plus touchscreen multimedia system and the top-of-the-line Invincible models gaining the new Safety pack.

The new Safety Pack includes adaptive cruise control and pre-crash safety system, Lane Change Assist, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Blind Spot Monitor and a Multi Terrain Monitor which gives a 360-degree view of the vehicle’s surroundings.

Prices start at £35,895 for the manual three-door/five seat Active model and reach all the way up to £54,895 for the automatic five-door/seven seat Invincible model.
