Mercedes could build its very own all-electric SUV / crossover, in order to compete with similar rumored offerings from its premium German rivals. No details were given, just that they’re considering it.

Dutch site Autovisie quotes the CEO of Daimler, Dieter Zetsche, who reportedly finds the idea “interesting.” However, that’s all he’d say and the rest is for us to speculate upon.

Since the proposed electric high-rider from Audi is said to be Q5-based, this one from Mercedes could very well use the underpinnings of the new GLC (GLK replacement), instead of the larger GLE (ML replacement). This would be a natural way to go as the lower weight and better aero of the smaller vehicle would help efficiency and performance.

We’ll add more to this story when we hear more, but currently, we seem to be looking at three such vehicles coming in the not too distant future, all from German manufacturers. Oh, and then there’s the Tesla Model X too, however it seems they simply don’t have enough sales volume to threaten the established brands.
