Coupe versions are by definition less practical than the sedan models they’re derived from, but in the case of the upcoming Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe, it appears that things have been taken a step further.

Compared to the previous-generation C-Class Coupe, the new model will feature a sportier exterior design. According to vehicle line chief Christian Frueh, who spoke to Automotive News, reduced rear seat room and less trunk space compared to the sedan are the price Mercedes-Benz will pay for a sleeker roofline.

Scheduled to debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, the all-new C-Class Coupe has a 1.6in lowered roofline compared to the sedan, which is why the rear seats have been pushed forward.

As a result, the passengers sit almost an inch (25mm) lower and the center of gravity has been lowered accordingly, favoring handling. Add sharper steering and a re-tuned suspension to the equation and it’s clear that the C-Class Coupe will be better to drive on track than the sedan.

That will be especially true for the wide-body AMG variants, which will sport unique side panels giving them a meaner look compared to the standard coupe.

When the all-new Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe arrives in the US next spring, it will include the 241hp C300 Coupe powered by a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine, which is expected to start at just under $40,000. The C400 Coupe and C450 AMG Coupe will use the 3.0-liter V6, while the 469hp C63 Coupe and 503hp C63 S Coupe will be powered by Mercedes-AMG’s 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8. A Mercedes-Benz C-Class Cabriolet will also arrive next year.
