Even though the Lexus IS is a very good looking sports sedan, it’s nowhere near as versatile as some, if not most of its rivals.

Back in 2003, you could buy an IS called the SportCross, which back then was a rather handsome station wagon – unfortunately Lexus didn’t follow up on that design when they introduced the 2nd generation IS in 2005.

Now in its 3rd generation, the IS is as modern and as dynamic-looking as it’s ever been. Still, it was never designed to be a station wagon, and looking at this rendering it’s easy to understand why.

The IS features a lot of horizontal/angular design lines and a very imposing shoulder line which would be somewhat difficult to carry on to a Sportwagon, SportCross or what ever you’d call a modern-day IS Estate.

Of course, if you’re a Lexus fan, you probably know that estate cars aren’t exactly their bread and butter. In other words, that’s not their type of luxury.

There’s also another issue with the current, 3rd gen IS. It does have a couple of awkward angles, even in F Sport trim. Butchering the rear shoulder line will definitely not improve on this car’s looks – which are otherwise very good, as long as you follow the right angles.

But let’s face it, neither Lexus, Jaguar, nor Infiniti will be able to truly challenge the might of BMW‘s 3 Series, Audi’s A4 and Mercedes’ C-Class in terms of overall sales.
