The BMW E34 540i already has upgraded components over lesser models of the day as well as a sweet four-liter V8 engine. It’s a great buy if all you’re looking for is four doors, comfort and long-legged performance at a bargain price plus the added benefit of rolling low-profile.

A 540i wouldn’t necessarily make for a great canyon carver, but for highways and roads with sweeping bends it’s perfect.

This example, driven in the video below by Matt Farah, has minimal mods but they make an already good car great. Its owner has replaced all bushings with polyurethane ones, given the engine a light tune, a (surprisingly quiet) straight exhaust, as well as good tires.

The result is a superb cruiser with retro appeal – you’ve got to remember it’s now twenty years old…

According to the owner, while it has left him stranded twice since he’s owned it, he says it was nothing major and that apart from the occasional oil leak from the engine it’s been quite reliable.
