There was a time in history when sporty cars sounded like airplanes (before WWII). Now, it would appear we’re going backwards as Alfa Romeo’s new Giulia Quadrifoglio Verde seems to summon thunder behind it…

At least its exhaust does, as it makes the audio feed of the video posted below via AutoWeek crackle and distort. That’s the mark of a very loud, insufficiently muffled exhaust – for the pre-WWII fighter planes, their extremely short free-flow exhausts caused a similar effect.

This Alfa promieses to be an exciting car to drive and also one of the most powerful in its class. It’s got its work cut out for it against the sharp BMW M3 and the brutish but lovable Mercedes C63 AMG. The engine sound will be a big point to make about it, and we say it has no trouble beating the strange-sounding BMW, although the Mercedes will be a harder challenger in that respect.

Scroll down to hear the Alfa in action and wonder, like us, why they’re still using camouflaged prototypes after revealing the production spec car…
