Facelifted Alpina D3 Bi-Turbo Gets Subtle Design Tweaks, Keeps 345HP Powertrain

Since the BMW 3-Series recently received a makeover, Alpina has updated its diesel-powered D3 Bi-Turbo as well.

The upgrade only touches the styling and equipment to bring them in line with the model it’s based on – the mechanical part hardly needed an update. As with the regular 2016 BMW 3-Series, changes are hard to spot for an untrained eye.

Modifications include a new front spoiler and a chrome BMW kidney grille, new LED headlights, a redesigned rear apron incorporating two twin tailpipes, and new LED taillights.

Inside, Alpina says high quality materials, new surface elements and subtle design changes can be noticed. Additionally, standard equipment now includes Cruise Control, Park Distance Control and Storage Package for added security and comfort.

As before, Alpina D3 Bi-Turbo models are powered by a twin-turbo 3-liter straight-six engine that produces 350PS (345hp) and 700Nm (516lb-ft) of torque. Thanks to these impressive numbers, the D3 Bi-Turbo Saloon sprints from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 4.6 seconds and reaches a top speed of 276 km/h (171 mph). The D3 Bi-Turbo Touring model does the 0-100 km/h sprint in 4.6 seconds as well, but hits a marginally slower top speed of 274 km/h (170 mph).

Considering these performance numbers, the official average fuel economy ratings may seem like a joke. However, Alpina insists the sedan averages 5.3 l/100 km (44.4 mpg US) and 139 g/km CO2 based on the ECE norm (5.4 l/100 km and 142 g/km CO2 for the estate).

The Alpina D3 Bi-Turbo Touring is also available with the xDrive all-wheel drive system with a performance-oriented torque distribution control system. With xDrive, the D3 Bi-Turbo Touring achieves the quickest 0-100 km/h sprint in 4.5 seconds and tops out at 270 km/h (168 mph).
