With Ferrari’s introduction of the 488 GTB, McLaren’s own mid-engine, mid-level supercar might fall a little short. But even if true, that might soon change…

That’s because the British car manufacturer is considering a replacement for the 650S as early as 2018. According to Autocar, the new McLaren will challenge Ferrari’s dominion in an all new, all exciting performance-figure war.

All of McLaren’s models provoke a stir when launched, even though, unfortunately, the majority of them are destined for a brief life spawn. Take for instance the 650S; it was unveiled at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show and will allegedly be replaced in 2018, after just 4 years of duty.

Compared to other car manufacturers – cough, cough Lamborghini – McLaren has made a commitment to launch a new model every year. It may sound odd, but that actually ensures low production numbers, making the majority of the automobiles pretty rare and highly desirable.

Currently known as the P14, the upcoming model is believed to sport McLaren’s signature carbon fiber tub and the same 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8. Moreover it’s possible the power output will exceed the 666 HP figure developed by the extremely limited and exclusive 675LT model.

To compete against the likes of the 488 GTB, McLaren’s future automobile will have to reach a top speed greater than 205 Mph and sprint from 0 to 62 Mph in under 3 seconds.

Design-wise, the P14 is believed to have an “even crazier” design than the P1, as Frank Stephenson – McLaren design director – stated. That means the vehicle will have a new design-language from which future McLarens will draw inspiration from.
