Mitsubishi’s 2016 model year lineup reportedly will not include the Mirage (known as the Space Star in Europe). It’s quite surprising, because the small hatchback debuted on the US market only two years ago as a 2014 model.

However, this doesn’t mean that the Mirage is gone for good. According to Car&Driver, Mitsubishi has excluded the Mirage subcompact from its 2016 plans only to bring it back for the 2017 model year with powertrain and chassis updates. Unfortunately, there’s no information on what these updates will consist of.

The 2017 Mitsubishi Mirage will be introduced in spring 2016, with the Japanese automaker’s move aimed at saving the time and effort required to federalize and market what would have been a brief 2016MY Mirage. In addition, there should be plenty of 2015 Mirages on dealer lots to satisfy demand until the 2017 model arrives.

Along with the updated hatch, Mitsubishi will launch a 2017 Mirage sedan, a model sold as the Attrage in other parts of the world. With the sedan, the automaker will rival Nissan’s Versa sedan and other similar small sedans.

The Mitsubishi Mirage didn’t receive convincing reviews, with the most criticized aspects of the car including the handling, feeble 74hp 1.2-liter 3-cylinder engine and cheap-looking interior.
