A free mobile app called EnLigthen will be made available to BMW owners straight on their infotainment screen, thus allowing them to know how much time they have to wait at traffic lights.

The app is the creation of Connected Signals, an Oregon-based company and it basically works by connecting into a city’s smart traffic light systems and then displaying the approximate time remaining.

Up until now, it was purely a mobile app, but BMW has announced that it will be integrated into their infotainment menus. You’ll still need to have a phone in the car for the internet connection that makes it work, but you won’t have to glance down at your phone and risk getting a ticket from road workers

If you don’t have a BMW or just don’t want to wait until it’s rolled out (probably as part of a software update), then you can right now download the app for free on either Android or iOS devices.

Be warned, though, that it’s only currently compatible with a limited number of cities; see the marked map below for details.
