The good people of Euro NCAP released a whole bunch of new ratings ahead of the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show, with two luxury SUVs leading the way in the all-new Volvo XC90 and Audi Q7.

These two basically went head-to head, matching each other blow for blow (literally) in terms of occupant protection and pedestrian protection. However, the XC90 stood out big by earning full marks in both crash avoidance and driver assistance tests.

There were also three new MPVs tested in the VW Touran and Ford’s Galaxy & S-Max models. Families everywhere can breathe a sigh of relief, because all of these models received top ratings during crash tests.

The other two models that got 5 star ratings were the Toyota Avensis and the Renault Kadjar, delivering solid safety performance across the board.

According to the Euro NCAP report, good occupant protection still remains the backbone of these types of tests, but the availability and good performance of avoidance and driver support systems are proving key, since they’ll ultimately pave the way for highly automated vehicles and eventually autonomous ones.

The final two models tested were the Mazda CX-3 and the Mitsubishi L200 pick-up, which only managed to score 4 stars each. It seems that a full 5-star rating is impossible nowadays without automated safety systems on board.
