The Mustang I concept was Ford’s way of studying what type of sports car it should build with mass appeal. It’s really very different to the actual production Mustang it spawned, but with its mid-engined V4 configuration and Lotus-like styling, it really was something else.

The only visual tie-in between the I concept and the first series Mustang were the fake louvers on the back… But this does by no means detract from the I’s appeal or uniqueness factor.

In fact, maybe it could have resulted in a totally different production sports car alongside the Mustang which was, after all, just a period Falcon chassis with fancier sheetmetal and heavily stylized interior…

If you’re interested in how and why Ford created it and want to hear the official side of the story, then do check out the period behind the scenes documentary posted below.
