While a Rolls-Royce SUV could outshine the Bentley Bentayga in terms of prestige and of course price tag, there’s nothing wrong with a little extra competition in the luxury SUV segment.

But what’s wrong with this picture? And no, I don’t mean the rendering, but the whole luxury SUV picture. Since when is a Sports Utility Vehicle meant to be as pricey as a state of the art exotic supercar and what exactly is the endgame here? Is “luxury” itself growing in size as the general public switches from hatchbacks to crossovers and from saloons to SUVs in terms of what they’d rather own?

Ask some people and they would tell you that yes, that is indeed where we are heading. So in a way, the fact that we have an ultra-expensive Bentley SUV shouldn’t really upset anybody. Most of us are perfectly fine with the cars that we can afford, whereas people with deeper pockets can always let go their Flying Spur or Mulsanne, in favor of the Bentayga.

Rolls-Royce customers would be looking to do the same possibly, by either adding an SUV to their collection of Phantoms, Ghosts, Wraiths or Dawns, or simply by removing one and inserting the other.

Right now, we can speculate all we want about what a Rizzy Royce SUV would look like, sound like, feel like or drive like, but the truth is, it could just as well feel a lot like driving a much taller Ghost.

As for its looks, well, Rolls-Royce always did build cars with very long and imposing front ends (almost truck-like), which should translate well design-wise to a bigger vehicle. In fact, a Rolls-Royce SUV could be easier on the eyes than the Bentley Bentayga, but we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.
