In an effort to try to shift the GLE Coupe’s image from BMW X6 copy to something suitably self-flattering, Mercedes is pulling out all of the marketing stops.

It’s enlisted the help of renowned Swiss tennis player Roger Federer, plus now it’s calling the new X6 clone “an SUV with the soul of a racing car.” That may be true, but nobody would want to take a GLE Coupe to the track so it’s utterly irrelevant – the only reason to do that would be to do a review on it or at a manufacturer-sponsored event.

Along with the latest GLE Coupe ad for the US, Mercedes also posted one for the regular GLE (ML replacement). For it the tone is very different and far more suitable for a modern SUV promo.

That’s in part because there is a genuine purpose for the GLE, as it’s a shape and style of car that people do find useful where no other car would cut it – it’s a package with substance.

The GLE Coupe on the other hand is a more superficial offering aimed at people for whom traveling with family and friends in style and comfort takes a (more cramped) back seat to being seen in said status-boosting vehicle.
