SsangYong has introduced a new diesel engine and optional six-speed automatic transmission on the 2016MY Korando SUV.

The new 2.2-liter diesel Euro 6 engine delivers more power and better economy than its predecessor, while CO2 emissions are down as well.

The e-XDi220 diesel engine is offered with two-wheel drive, four-wheel drive and either a six-speed manual or a new Aisin six-speed automatic transmission. The unit delivers 178PS (176hp) and 400Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque between 1,400 and 2,800 rpm.

Maximum output and torque are up by 19.4 percent and 11 percent respectively over the previous Euro 5 2.0-liter diesel engine. CO2 emissions have been reduced to 139 g/km from 147 g/km on the previous two-wheel drive, manual transmission model. Also, fuel economy is significantly improved to 53.3 mpg (5.3 l/100 km) over the combined cycle for the two-wheel drive manual compared, compared to 47.1 mpg (6 l/100 km) on the model it replaces.

Besides the new diesel engine, the 2016MY SsangYong Korando adds subtle design upgrades including clear glass direction indicators, a new piano black radiator grille with additional chrome detailing on the ELX grade and new-look 16-, 17- and 18-inch alloy wheels.

In terms of equipment, the Korando gets an upgraded infotainment system, USB memory slot, Aux port and HDMI port on all models. The SE grade gains an RDS audio system with an MP3 player, Bluetooth and iPod/iPhone connectivity, while the EX grade features a 7-inch high-resolution touch screen with audio streaming from smart devices and a link to the rear view camera. Finally, the range-topping ELX grade now offers a TomTom navigation system.

Prices in the UK start from £15,995 for the base Korando SE.
