BMW is treating us to a massive photo shoot of the North American-spec versions of their brand-new X1 compact SUV and facelifted 3-Series sedan taken in Mexico’s picturesque Copper Canyon.

Frankly, nothing substantial changed for the 2016 BMW 3-Series on the cosmetic front, just some nearly untraceable tweaks to the bumpers, new alloy wheel designs and exterior colors, updated interior trims, plus standard LED lights at the rear and optional full-LED headlights.

Nevertheless, there were a few important developments under the hood. While Europe welcomed the first 3-cylinder petrols, the North American model got a new 340i edition with a B58 3.0-liter turbo six pumping out 320hp and 330 lb-ft to replace the 335i and its 300hp and 300 lb-ft N55 six, and from next year, the new 330e Plug-in Hybrid with a 249hp (252hp) 2.0-liter turbo engine and electric motor combo.

It’s a different story with the 2016 BMW X1, as besides being the all-new, second iteration of the series, it also represents another mainstream leap for the Bavarians, as it’s the firm’s first front-wheel drive platform-based ‘X’ model. For now, at least, North America will only get a taste of the X1 xDrive28i with standard all-wheel drive and a 228hp and 258 lb-ft 2.0-liter straight-four turbo gasoline mill hooked up to an 8-speed automatic.
