Honda Announces New 1.0L, 1.5L VTEC Turbo Engines For Europe’s Next-Gen 2017 Civic

Honda has announced two new VTEC Turbo engines for its European lineup, with the tenth-generation Civic 2017MY being the first model to get them.

Set for launch in Europe from early 2017, the next-generation Civic will be offered with 1.0-liter and 1.5-liter VTEC Turbo engines. These units will be part of Honda’s growing Earth Dreams Technology range and will deliver “a combination of dynamic performance, class-leading output and excellent fuel economy.”

Honda has already launched its first new VTEC Turbo engine in Europe – the 310PS (306hp) 2.0-liter turbocharged unit that allows the Civic Type R to sprint from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 5.7 seconds.

The new units are based on a completely new engine structure and utilize newly developed turbo systems. They also feature variable valve motion technology to reduce friction and achieve “class-leading output and environmental performance.”

The new engines use a turbocharger with a low moment of inertia and high responsiveness, and direct injection technology. According to Honda, these characteristics allow the engines to achieve good balance between high output and torque, “above those of conventional naturally-aspirated engines.”

The all-new Civic will debut in early 2017 in Europe, with five door variants to be exclusively produced at Honda’s UK manufacturing plant (HUM) in Swindon. Honda has confirmed investment of €270 million ($298 million) in new production technologies and processes to prepare for the new model.
