Toyota officially revealed GT86’s smaller brother in the form of the S-FR Concept, scheduled to debut at the Tokyo Motor Show.

The S-FR Concept is believed to spawn a production version to sit under the GT86 as the entry-level proposition in Toyota’s upcoming three-model-strong sports line-up with the flagship being the future Supra successor that’s being co-developed with BMW.

British magazine AutoExpress is reporting that the new Miata-rivalling S-FR will feature a four-cylinder 1.5-litre petrol engine, producing around 130hp, while the final weight figure is expected to be less than one tonne, at about 980kg.

We already know that Toyota’s latest baby will feature a good old-fashioned six-speed manual gearbox. These specs will place the new compact sports coupe directly against the Mazda MX-5 ND which also uses a 1.5-litre petrol in its cheapest form.

Inspired clearly by the classic Sports 800, the Toyota S-FR is expected to reach production towards the end of 2016/early 2017. Whether it will be available on a global scale remains to be seen.
